Yirgacheffe Coffee Washing
The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU), currently represents over 43,794 farmers belonging to more than 300,000 families, and was established in June 2002. Its currently 23 member cooperatives are all located in Gedeo, Southern Ethiopia. Yirgacheffe is a region within Sidamo in Southern Ethiopia which is by many considered the birthplace of coffee. Arabica coffee, now produced all over the world (all of our coffees are arabica) is documented in this region as far back as the 12th century. The legend goes that coffee was discovered when goats in Ethiopia became very active after eating the leaves and fruits of the coffee tree. In Ethiopia, some people still drink an herbal tea with the leaves of the coffee tree.

In the 62,004 hectares gardens that are dedicated to coffee alone, on average produce 9,000 tons of Yirgacheffe and 3,000 tons of Sidamo washed coffee each year. The area also produces 24,000 tons of sun-dried coffee annually.
