Café Orgánico Marcala (COMSA) was founded in 2001 by 69 small-scale Lenca farmers in Marcala, Honduras, to provide new opportunities and fairer markets for local coffee producers. Originally facing challenges with low prices and conventional farming, COMSA transitioned to organic and specialty coffee production with the support of educational partners like CEDECO, training members in innovative organic techniques and promoting soil, water, and biodiversity conservation. Today, COMSA is a thriving cooperative of 620 members, cultivating Arabica varietals (Catuai, Caturra, Lempira, Pacas) at altitudes of 1200–1600 meters. Their coffee is recognized for its citric acidity, medium body, and unique flavors of honey, mango, and bitter chocolate, and is certified organic, FLO, and SPP. COMSA now exports significant volumes of high-quality, regionally distinctive coffee, managing its own processing facilities and maintaining rigorous quality standards.
